Under the direction of the Park Grounds & Ecology Chairperson, Lydya Renninger, the Friends of Coleman Memorial Park has completed the park’s first official tree inventory in its 90 year history. The Friends employed the services of Jon Schach from Good’s Tree and Lawn Care based in Harrisburg, PA.
Species Inventory
With particular focus on areas inside the park’s Bashore Dr. loop, Schach assessed and tagged a total of 794 trees and shrubs, noting the species, size, and condition of each one. “Coleman Memorial Park has an impressive collection of mature specimen trees,” remarked Schach in his final report.
A total of 794 landscape trees and shrubs were inventoried, comprising 81 tree species. Three tree genera account for 73% of the tree population: Oaks, Maples, and Black Tupelo.

The 2026 Tree Inventory also documents risk factors, including plant health along with the threats of pests and disease. An intentional tree removal plan based on the tree risk assessment will create new planting opportunities, adding more diversity of species to the park.
Support the Tree Management Plan
The Coleman Memorial Park Tree Inventory is an essential first step in the sustainable management of the park’s trees. Following through on the maintenance recommendations requires a commitment from the whole community. Individuals are invited to visit our Donate Page to make a $90 donation in honor of our park’s 90th Anniversary.
The Friends are also looking for corporate partnerships to support recommended disease control interventions, cabling and bracing of select trees, and removal of trees designated to be in poor condition. Corporate sponsors are requested to reach out via email at friends@colemanpark.com.
The Reach for Arboretum Level II
Arboreta are vital green spaces that promote environmental awareness, support biodiversity, and serve as living laboratories for education, conservation, and community engagement around nature. With continued inventory efforts, the park will easily reach the required 100 species needed to apply for Level II Arboretum Accreditation.
